I created a bit to toggle how many functions printed diagnostic messages, and I made it so the music keyboard could activate it by playing note zero, which is below the audible range for humans (8.176Hz). The first fifteen notes are below 20Hz, so I can use those for future utilities.
I got no response when I tried playing through the synthesizer, so I swapped cables and adapters. I plugged in my LED tester and saw good output. The situation was confusing because it used to work fine, and when I plugged the keytar directing in, I heard a sound. I struggled and found that certain combinations refused to work, but I made a working configuration by installing MuseScore, because it had a built-in synthesizer. Most of the day was spent, but I found an errant serial command that could have been screwing up my Note Off commands.
