A new lid was designed which was only different from the old version by moving the protrusion away from the center. The old version made it difficult to tell when collisions between the spinner and lid were happening which may have been a problem of the protrusion being too close to the center. Parts for a new compass were printed and a new jar was taken from stock.
Each time a new compass is constructed with these models a series of steps need to be taken. Many of the older model simply needed to be assembled with magnets and brass hardware. This version requires magnets to glued to the spinner, the post hole needed to be drilled, the based needed to be glued in the jar and placed by a vent, an aluminum rivet needed to be sharpened and trimmed, the jar lid and printed lid needed to be glued together and an O-ring needed to be installed. If the post isn’t straight it would need to be heated and adjusted.
Different parts allows for higher performance. By gluing the magnets to the spinner they don’t need the extra seating material. A metal post has less friction. The rubber O-ring dampens impacts. The discovery of these parts as options has come at the expense of previous models but has provided a wealth of information and experience.
