Sandpaper was purchased to shape the gears. This sandpaper was medium grit (80-120 grit) so it would not leave a smooth edge but it cut through the plastic easily. It was wrapped around a piece of scrap wood that was 1/2" (12mm) thick and held on one side with an office paper binding clip. This provided two flat edges and a way to handle the material.
Gears were held firmly against a cement staircase during sanding which went quickly thanks to the rough sandpaper. A gear was photographed before the last portion was finished. The rough plastic can be seen between the teeth on the left while the plastic between the other teeth is clean and the edges meet up with the paper accurately.

Improvised sanding block
