In my work, I sometimes check mains power UPS devices in industrial enclosures, and they are massive affairs. Less often, I also see DC units which supply industry-standard 24VDC even when power drops. I understand the usefulness and expense of a UPS, so a rudimentary one for a single board computer that can be built for a few dollars seemed like a worthy subject for an article.
