I was not getting reliable information from the MIDI port. My MIDI ↔ USB converter is a known good, so I have something wrong with my code or project. I added a ground wire to my stereo headphone socket since I'd seen that on diagrams, but I removed it when I thought it might interfere with the power or signal on a mono jack. I reversed the data and power wire, but that didn't work at all. The closest I got was when I uploaded some example code, and the USB adapter detected something, but it was unintelligible. The port seems capable of outputting data.
