I thought my collapsing sail was due to the flexibility of my frame and the bottom hinges angling upward. I considered options for forcing it down and some complex bearings. Instead of spending time on a hypothesis of where the problem lies, I made a simplified version with a rope run inside PVC pipes. The top handle is a 7/8" (22 mm) round dowel with a couple of steel eye screws at the ends.
Testing was disappointing because I had the same problem as before: the wind blew the sail so far back that it barely caught any wind. When I pressed down on the handle, the hinges tightened the fabric but not enough to call it successful.
I considered the geometry of the sails and my limited knowledge of sailing. I think the biggest problem is the shapes, which are simple triangles. The solution could be to redesign them into a bag.
