2024-08-16 (F) Weekly Summary

I started sketches for an adjustable piece on the spinner that would raise and lower a ball bearing, but I scrapped the idea because I decided against something that needed adjustment being put on the moving part.
Idle plans

I sketched some ideas that should let me position an M3 threaded rod right next to the bottom screw that holds the spinner axle. I will have to tap the holes after I print the part.
Design notes

I updated the shell model with my changes. The slot is not a round hole and there are plinths for the machine screws. The bottom plinth has a concavity to accommodate the axle-holding screw.

I printed a new shell bottom, but the hardware did not install as smoothly as I hoped. The central M4 machine screw stuck out further than expected, which bumped into the M3 threaded rod. Everything inside aligned well, but the compass would not sit levelly.

I considered some complicated designs to hold a couple of ball bearings to the spinner, but I settled on a simple one to start with the understanding that I could upgrade if it worked. The tabs are long enough to hold large bearings, but the hole is small enough to accommodate tiny ones. The hole also lets me add glue from the backside.

When I assembled the compass and adjusted the hardware, I got some good feedback! I want to try another design before I spend significant time miniaturizing anything.
