The most complex mechanism in the compass will be the springs at either end. They will have two sets of fine threads, a socket for installing a set screw, and a printed spring that I need to be able to tune via programming. Before modeling, I sketched the profile in detail and listed the critical features and dimensions. I considered making the springs more versatile, like multiple layers, but I wanted to try printing a set first.
