There was one button and one LED that were not working. I started with the LED since it was a lone operator, and I hoped it would be as simple as resoldering a joint or swapping the wires. I confirmed that it did not work by uploading the IO expander code and blinking the output. I checked the wire's continuity and measured a voltage change on the pin. I swapped the wires, but it still refused to work. The light is inconsequential, so I will remove it from the IO list.
The second malfunction was the BACK button. I repeated the continuity test but could not see a switch when I measured the difference between the output and the ground. The problem was that the board used a separate ground for this button, and I left it disconnected. When I added it to the GND pin on the IO expander board, I could read the button reliably.
