The Adafruit "Music Maker" board I used required a small mod to work as a MIDI synth. I jumpered GPIO1 to the 3V pin next to it with a wire scrap and solder so it would boot into synth mode. The instructions also required a jumper from Arduino pin 2 to the Rx pin for the onboard chip, but I would run my data line directly there so that jumper would not be unnecessary. I ran a couple of power wires from the prototyping PCB to the synth breakout board. Lastly, I ran a wire from the Arduino's Tx pin that already had a connection to the outgoing MIDI port but bypassed the resistor there.
