The example code for reading the IO expanders would print a message every cycle if I held a button. I wanted reports when a button state changed, i.e., rising and falling edges. I made three arrays called buttonState[], risingEdge[], and fallingEdge[]. As I cycled the IO expander inputs, if the reading was higher or lower than buttonState[], I could conclusively say that the button had been pressed or released since the last cycle. Each array had 32 bits for the IO expanders, although some of them will be ignored since they have LEDs connected.
